Buying bearings in Mumbai: what to bring, what to ask, and how to avoid fakes

A short guide for first-time buyers in Mumbai: what to bring to the shop, what to ask the dealer, and how to be sure the bearing is genuine.

Whether you run a workshop, maintain a plant or are fixing a machine at home, buying the right bearing takes a few minutes if you arrive prepared. This guide covers what to bring, what to ask, and how to make sure the bearing is genuine.

What to bring

  • The old bearing, if you have it. The number on the ring is the quickest way to the right part. Even a worn bearing usually keeps most of its marking.
  • A clear photo of the marking, if you cannot bring it. Photograph both faces of the bearing in good light, and send it to us on WhatsApp.
  • The three measurements. If the number is worn off, the bore, outside diameter and width in millimetres identify the size. See how to measure a bearing and our size chart.
  • The machine and where the bearing sits. A motor, a gearbox, a fan and a conveyor roller each have their own usual types. Tell us the application and any special conditions, such as heat, water or dust.
  • The quantity. One piece for a repair, or a batch for a stock order, and whether you will want it again.

Five questions to ask any dealer

  1. Is it genuine, and which brand? A dealer who sources from the makers will say so plainly.
  2. Does the number match exactly? Seals, clearance and cage letters matter as much as the basic number. See how to read a bearing number.
  3. Is it in stock, or how long will it take? Common sizes are usually held, while unusual ones are sourced, which takes longer. See sourcing odd-size bearings.
  4. What does the price include? Ask whether the price is for one brand and version, and whether it is the same for the quantity you need.
  5. Will I get a proper bill? Businesses need a GST invoice, and it also shows where the bearing came from.

How to check a bearing is genuine

Check that the marking on the ring matches the number and brand on the box exactly, that the lettering is crisp and the finish even, and that the bearing turns smoothly and quietly by hand. Be wary of a price far below the market, or of a famous brand offered in a plain wrapper. Our guide to how to spot fake bearings gives the details.
